I would love to have information about this as well.  There is no DSL offered in my area, and we don't have cable coming to our house.  I'm still on dial-up and of course, hate it.

I have used both major high speed satellite providers and I enjoy Hughesnet more.  I have had them for a while and they are much better than anything else that has been available in my area.

Thanks for the recommendation.  Can I ask you something else?  What is the set up and installation like?  Does it take a long time?

As I mentioned it was a while ago but I'm pretty sure it took less than a week.

I have been using the internet for approximately 20 years. I currently access through Hughes. If I had cable access I would blow Hughes off. Their "fair Access Policy (FAB)" threshold is too low for an experienced user. It considers page loading as downloading. With the amount of data on pages increasing, I find myself exceeding my threshold earlier and earlier. My download speed is 100Kbps. It should be 700Kbps according to the plan I have. Down time is minimal even with poor weather conditions. Weather does slow it down but does not seem to stop it. I try to use their allotted time frame of 3AM-6AM to do my major downloads. This period does not count against the FAP threshold. Price is not bad. $60/month for the standard home plan which I have. However I may be forced to upgrade my plan to overcome the threshold limit problem. Installation only took one day and I was up and running. Equipment cost was $600. I was supposed to get a $200 rebate. Never saw it. I inquired about it and was told (after the fact) that I was supposed to go to the Hughes site and download the form. This was not passed on to me by the sales people not the installation technician. I suspect that it is policy to not "volunteer" this information. Provide it only if the customer inquires. Draw your own conclusions from my post. Pass it on to anyone considering Hughes.

I am  SO HAPPY that I found this forum so I can give some information to those hoping to get Satellite Internet service.    B U Y E R    B E W A R E ! ! !

D O   N O   G O   TO  HUGHES Network Systems LLC for your Satellite Internet service.
Yesterday, Hughes showed up to install the system which was suppose to be "free installation".

Unexpected Expense  - Suddenly, "You can't mount this on your house.  You need a POLE in the yard.   I will install a wooden pole and it's going to cost $xxx.xx for the pole"
Oh, and next he refused to run the broadband cable under the house.  He wanted to drill through my walls and string cable across the floors.  Guess who crawled under the house and drilled the hole and pulled his own cable?   RIGHT!

Next came the bombshell.   With all of this expensive equipment, and now "Paying for installation" I start testing my Internet speed.   Sure enough, I got 1MB speeds...  until I reached 250MB of data transfer.   Suddenly....  "QUOTA REACHED".  No more internet for 24 hours.   Once you get 250 MB of data, it quits working (their user threshold for the day).   Now, with a transfer rate of 1MB/sec... withing 200 seconds of downloading (that's 4.1 minutes of highspeed downloading or gaming) and it no longer works.  You can't get any more data.

Now.... Who provides Internet in ANY form, and has a 250MB data transfer limit per day??  HUGHES, that's who.

Next, I wait 30 hours and still can't get data.  They have not reset the flag that stops my data transfer.  Do you realize how much data is transferred just browsing a few web pages?

Ok, I now call them back (yeah, I did talk to several people in India, several times) and finally decide...   "COME GET THIS CRAP.  I WANT MY MONEY BACK"

SORRY CHARLIE....   Can't get this pole removed.   I am not getting most of my money back, and NONE for this ugly damn pole in my yard.   TOTALLY dissatisfied with HUGHES, I am now ready to go to the Consumer Protection Agency, and a damn good lawyer.

TAKE IT FROM SOMEONE WITH EXPERIENCE.    HUGHES Network Systems LLC Internet is a HUGE rip off.   I still can not imagine someone actually using this crap and settling for a 24 hour limit of 250 Megabytes of data transfer.  Oh, that was the DOWNLOAD transfer.   The upload was even less.

Hey, this is the same company that the US Government uses in remote areas.  NO WONDER OUR GOVERNMENT SPENDS SO MUCH MONEY.   To get more data, the price goes up exponentially.

I am headed to the local rural telephone company for some unlimited Internet access.  Yes it will cost more, but at least I can USE it.
