High Speed Internet Forum / Service Providers / DSL / DSL keeps dropping and the phone makes a cracking noise?

Since yesterday evening around 3:00 our DSL connection keeps dropping and it won't stay connected for more than 2 to 4 minutes at a time. Also, our phone now makes a loud crackling noise. We've had Verizon DSL since late November '09 and have never had a problem like this.

We called and went through the whole automated questions bit and a pre-recorded message said that a tech would be out sometime tomorrow between 8:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. What do you guys think?
