Dial-Up Internet

Dial-up internet access is available for subscribers through a home or office telephone line. The connection is achieved by hooking up to a modem connected to a telephone line to establish a modem-to-modem link.

Pros

  • Requires no infra structure other than a telephone line
  • Dial-up modems are inexpensive
  • The overall service is inexpensive
  • Available wherever there is a phone line
  • ISP providers offer local dial-up numbers to eliminate long distance charges

Cons

  • Ties up the telephone line while connected to the internet
  • Cost can build up if there is not flat rate local calling on the lines
  • Can be expensive if long distance charges are incurred
  • Only “on” when you dial up
  • Time limits for accessibility
  • Very slow upload and download speeds
